Udupi town to be free of beggars from March 1 PDF Print E-mail

Udupi, Feb 26: "Udupi town will become a no-beggar zone from March 1, and all efforts are being made by us to ensure this with support from the district authorities," said Kolladi Balakrishna Rai, state president and Nithyanand Voladkad, district president of the Movement for Social Life and Human Rights (MFSLHR), Karnataka.

Rai and Nithyanand told reporters that in order to contain the nuisance, particularly at the City Service Bus Stand, Manipal Bus Stand and other public places and private residences, MFSLHR will take the initiative to rehabilitate them at the state home, Nittur, Udupi, and thereby put a stop to begging.

Nithyanand said they have approached the district administration, police and the district women and child welfare department and other departments, to support their initiative. He said so many young children and handicapped persons are being dragged into begging, which is a slur to society. "Hence, it is our duty as civilized citizens to contain it. But at the same time, society and government have the moral responsibility to rehabilitate them."
