Mangalore, Jan 27: Dakshina Kannada district will achieve the target of sampoorna swacchatha jille (total sanitation district) by March 2008, said Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao. Delivering 58th Republic Day address after hoisting the tri-colour at Nehru Maidan here on Saturday, he said teachers have recruited for the newly sanctioned schools. Sixty Koraga families have been given RTCs so far. 

He said "anti-people force is raising its ugly head to destroy the internal security and to weaken the democratic set up. All their efforts to distrurb the peace, unity and integrity of the country should be destroyed. Let us be broad minded and work for national integrity," he added.

Mr Rao said temporary ration cards have been distributed to those from the BPL family. The drive to take photographs of the card holders to provide permanent card has been undertaken in the district. The drive to take photographs will commence soon in Mangalore taluk.

Attractive parade

KSRP, District Reserve, civil police, traffic police, home guards, NCC, Guides and Seva Dal members and police band presented an attractive parade at the Republic Day celebrations.

Mass drill

Hundreds of students enthralled the audience who had gathered at Nehru Maidan to witness the Republic Day celebrations.

Starting from the mass drill by students of Carmel School to yoga by Mangala Jyothi Integrated School, the one hour magnificient show forced the audience to glue to their seats. Yoga by the Mangala Jyothi School with the background music of ‘Ma thuje salam... Vande Matharam’ received highest applause from the public.

St Ann’s School and Holy Angles Primary School also took part in the programme.

Vintage car rally

The Mangaloreans had a rare opportunity to see the ‘old beauties on wheels’ on City roads.

Vintage cars parked in a row in a corner of Nehru Maidan before the flagging off attracted the attention of the children as well as adults. As many as 30 vintage and classic cars and bikes were part of the rally.

Superintendent of Police Sathish Kumar, ASP Lokesh Kumar, Zilla Panchayat President Sucharitha Shetty and others were present on the occasion.

24 honoured

During the celebrations, the DC honoured 24 persons for their achievements in various fields. Apart from this, Home Guards Bhodak Ramesh and SP squad’s Narayana Maniyani were honured for winning the President’s medal.

Apart from this, the winners of essay on ‘Nirdhar Darshan’ exhibition were also honoured. They included Kavya of Lady Hill Victoria Girls High School (I), Shwetha of St Ann’s High School (II) and Sowmya K of Sacred Heart High School (III).

The winners in sports included Chaithra D Suvarna for winning gold medal innational level shot put; Sushmitha Devadas for winning bronze medal in national level under 17 girls 200 metres and 400 metres race; Saurabha A Rao for winning gold medal in under 17 boys 50 metre back stroke, 4X100 metre free style relay; Thushanth D Bengre for winning gold medal in under 17 category, 50 metre butterfly swimming; Manjunath M D for winning gold medal in 5000 metres race; Jamaluddin for winning silver medal in 100 metres race and 4X 100 metre relay; Mohammed Ali, Shravanraj, Kumar N K, Dalwin Dayaz and Ranjith Rai for winning silver in 4X100 metre relay; Poornima G S, Rekha G K, Rashmi and Malini R for winning gold medal in women’s badminton; Srima Priyadarshani for second place in Heppathlan and 100 metre hurdles; Manjusha Hebbar and Hardika S Shetty for winning Indira Gandhi NSS Award; Varjilinia Saldanha and Preethi Rodrigues for taking part in National Integration Camp and second place in cultural programmes; Aniketh Albert D’Souza for winning Ekalavya award; Chandana K C for winning first place in high jump; and Poornima K L for winning second place in weightlifting.
