Udupi, Dec 12:The 74th All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan got off to a glittering start on Wednesday here with a colourful procession. Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, flagged off the procession. A chariot carrying Goddess Bhuvaneshwari was the first to be pulled by the literary enthusiasts.
Mangalore, Dec 13: More than 15,000 of the 40,000-odd people working in 5,626 gram panchayats of the State will go on an indefinite strike in Bangalore from December 18. K. Yadav Shetty, president of Karnataka Rajya Gram Panchayat Naukarara Sangha, affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions, told presspersons here on Thursday that the sangha would press for its six-point charter of demands. r. Shetty said the office-bearers of the sangha had met C.M. Udasi when he was the Minister for Panchayati Raj and Rural Development in the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party Government five times and appraised him of their demands. "There was no follow up action on part of the Government or the Minister," he charged.

Mangalore, Dec 8: The first passenger train between Mangalore and Bangalore after a hiatus of 16 years pulled out of the Mangalore Station exactly at 2.05pm with much fanfare. Central Ministers namely R. Velu Union Minister of State for Railways, Union minister of Labour Oscar Fernandes Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur, Central Administrative Reforms Commission Chairman M. Veerappa Moily, M.P. D.V. Sadananda Gowda and several former MLAs were present. The programme which was supposed to start at 12.30 officially began at 1.45 and after a brief stage programme the train was flagged off by Union Minister of Railways Laloo Prasad Yadav.
Mangalore, Dec 7: For reasons other than red tape, it has taken Indian Railways a whopping 11 years to resume passenger service between India's IT hub Bangalore and the port city of Mangalore in southern Karnataka. As a result, the railways have lost out a great deal to the road transport, besides the goodwill of the people in the region. The much awaited day is finally here, as Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav will flag off a "ceremonial train" from Mangalore on Saturday at 1.30 p.m.
